Early Signs of Rheumatoid Arthritis
During the early stages of RA, you may feel a variety of symptoms, including:
Stiffness in one or more of the smaller joints is a common early sign of RA. Usually, stiffness begins in the joints of the hands. It usually comes on slowly, although it can come on suddenly and affect multiple joints over the course of one or two days.
Numbness and tingling
Inflammation of tendons can create pressure on your nerves, it feels like pins and needles, a tingling, or as if a hand has gone to sleep. The sensations are not directly related to rheumatoid arthritis.
Joint stiffness is often followed by joint tenderness or pain during movement or while at rest. In early RA, the most common places you will feel pain the fingers and wrists. But you may also experience pain in your feet, ankles, knees or shoulders.
Flare-ups can last from a few days to a few weeks, and this pattern can be expected to increase with time.
Mild inflammation of the joints is typical early on, causing your joints to appear bigger than normal.
Decrease in range of motion
Inflammation in your joints can cause ligaments and tendons to become deformed and severely reduce the range of motion of joints Avoiding physical activity because of pain or discomfort also can lead to significant muscle loss.
Feeling unusually tired can come before any other symptoms become obvious by weeks or months. It may come and go from week to week or day to day.
When accompanied by other symptoms like joint pain and inflammation, a fever (not higher then 100°F /38°C ) may be an early warning sign that you have RA.
